I experienced a scary visit to the ER with my youngest son, Brantley who was 17 months old at the time. He woke up in the middle of the night, throwing up, coughing and couldn't breathe. He's had respiratory issues on and off since he was born so I didn't take this lightly. He is ok now, thankfully. This brings me to this cold and flu season. It's very scary that the flu has spread to every state in the country and people are dying from it. One minute someone is ok, next they have the flu. So what are the symptoms? How do we know if our children get it?
For me, the biggest question is, when is it necessary to take your child to the Doctor and ER?

I did not get a flu shot. Or any of children. That being said, you can still get the flu. You can never be too careful in my eyes. We all know our own children. If there is a change, in mood, sleep, eating, drinking, don't take it lightly. Flu can come on quickly so be prepared and know what to look for. Have your pediatrician on speed dial. I can call my pediatrician at Sacred Heart Pediatrics in Santa Rosa, FL after business hours. I can also walk in with my children everyday during the week from 8:00am-9:00am for emergencies without any appointment. If you're looking for a pediatrician, I highly recommend this facility. Trust your mom gut. I would rather go to the ER and be safe then sorry.
Here are some tips to help you avoid getting sick:
- avoid close contact with those who are sick
- stay home when you are sick
- cover your mouth when you sneeze and cough
- always wash your hands
- avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with dirty hands
- practice good health habits
- drink plenty of water
- eat plenty of fruit and veggies
If you can't remember all of this, just simply remember the three C's:
- Clean your hands often
- Cover your mouth or use your elbow to cough
- Contain your germs by staying inside and others it you're sick
Have you got the flu shot this season?
