Since moving here in June 2016, I've had a lot of messages asking about my big move to Florida. How we did it, why we did it, how to plan, where to look, where to work, etc. So many in fact, I cannot keep up with them, so I thought I would write a blog post about it and tell you how we came to this decision.
I first came to Destin with Travis, in March 2008 and fell in love with it. We vacationed every year until we realized this was a place we wanted to be always. We made a plan to do it. We lived in TN for 10 years together and wanted a healthy, outdoor, beach living lifestyle. We wanted to move before our (only child at the time) son Brayden went into Kindergarten. Fast forward 4 years later, and we moved when he was 9 on his summer break. It took a lot of time to make a plan, sell our home and businesses we had. A lot longer than we had anticipated but still stuck to the plan and made it happen. We always vacationed in Destin so that was where we enjoyed it. We looked round neighborhoods and schools for years. We owned 3 pubs so we were thinking of maybe opening one or buying a pub down here.
I get asked about so many different areas so here are some tips on deciding on your big move to this beautiful emerald coast.
- Where do you want to live? Do you already have a job lined up in an area? That would help in narrowing down your search. We chose Destin because we had aways vacationed here. It is more on the touristy side with hotels, high rise condos and attractions on every corner, but it doesn't bother me. Another reason I like Destin, is in 5-10 minutes, I can be everywhere I need. Any store, grocery store, school, dentist, and attractions. There is always something fun to do. Pensacola is an hour west of us. It is more of a city vibe with it's beautiful art galleries and city life and nightlife. Panama City Beach is an hour east from us. Panama City and Panama City Beach. I have only been to PCB. Miramar Beach is next town over from Destin. Doesn't seem to be as busy and homes don't seem to be as expensive. The famous 30A is just 20 minutes away. It reminds me of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket (for all you New Englanders) with its quaint beach town streets and cute stores. There are no condo high-rises, all local owned juice stands, restaurants, and bicycle rentals. The homes seem to be on the less expensive as well. But then again, it all depends on what you're looking for. All these towns are along the beautiful emerald coast waters. The school system in Okaloosa and Walton are some of the best in the state and crime is extremely low.
- What do you want to do? Remember we live in an area where people love to visit. So we definitely have our fair share of attractions that make you feel like you never want to go home and stay in vacation mode forever. If you're looking for a carer in the hospitality or tourism industry, Destin, Miramar Beach or along 30A might be the right place for you. Destin is a lovely community, so there are more jobs than just woking at the waterpark, but just to give you some examples
There is so much shopping here, fun events happening every month and always something exciting going on in the community. We are a part of the boat club, so we can go out on a boat whenever we want, and also the beach is a 3 minute drive. I gave up the snow for the sand and I absolutely love it! Anyone that I have ever met who has moved down here, has not regretted it!
I hope I was able to answer some questions you had. Any more please send me message I'd be happy to answer them. Make a list of what's most important to you and go from there. Take a trip down here and go see all the things on your list. Happy planning!
Here we are in June 2016, the day we left for our 8 hour drive to FL from TN. I was 7 months pregnant with our third son.
